Yonkers tenants who were booted out of their living spaces after a wall collapse at a luxury condo construction site were allowed brief entry to their homes Tuesday to collect personal belongings.
But the displaced families? stay was short lived. All work has been halted at the Main Street site, and surrounding buildings will stay vacated until city and project engineers can further assess what caused Monday?s collapse. At least three buildings were damaged as crews used a backhoe to remove a tree near a retaining wall and explosives to blast through bedrock. So far, engineers have determined that the blasts did not cause the collapse.
A dozen families are being forced to temporarily relocate and an auto repair shop on Hudson Street has shuttered its business for now. No one was hurt in the collapse but it could be weeks before engineers deem the site safe.
