A temporary homeless shelter is now open in Yonkers, replacing another shelter that closed its doors over the weekend, but some neighbors are voicing concerns about the new location.
As News 12 has reported, the Sharing Community's Men's Drop-in Center on Hudson Street in Yonkers shut its doors Sunday.
Westchester officials opened a temporary YWCA site about a quarter of a mile away, at the Kingdom Christian Cultural Center on Palisade Avenue.
The Yonkers YWCA says up to 50 men can be provided food and shelter at a time in that location. If it reaches capacity, people in need will be provided transportation to another location.
But some residents say they don't feel safe with the new center so close to their homes.
"I don't know if they're pedophiles or not and stuff like that. You got a lot of kids here," says Yonkers resident Shavie Davis.
But others say they're happy that people in need are receiving help.
The YWCA says there's no reason for people to worry. At its women's drop-in site on South Broadway, it says it makes it a top priority not to have people standing in the street, but instead inside, working on their goals.
County officials tell News 12 that they have their eyes on a permanent location, but they haven't announced where that will be at this time.
