Dozens of gallons of fuel spilled onto I-684 Friday evening after a big rig ruptured its saddle tank, forcing the highway to be shut down temporarily.
The driver of the 18-wheeler said he was driving along I-684 from Massachusetts to Pennsylvania when he spotted something in the middle of the road. He said he didn't have time to go around the object and ended up driving over it.
An investigation by state police later revealed that the object in the road was a metal ladder.
The ladder ripped open the saddle tank of the truck shortly after 6 p.m.
The truck pulled into a nearby rest area, but the damage was already done. Close to 100 gallons of oil spilled out, prompting hazmat crews to respond to the scene.
An environmental company will clean up the area at the expense of the trucking company.
