A hit-and-run accident on the bustling Garfield Road in the Hasidic community of Kiryas Joel has led to the arrest of the driver involved, authorities say.

The incident occurred around 10 p.m. Wednesday near one of the largest temples in the area.

State police say a 2014 Toyota driven by 37-year-old Eliezer Allami, of Monroe, was traveling northbound when it struck a 17-year-old boy who had stepped into the roadway.

Allami is accused of fleeing the scene immediately after the accident but was quickly apprehended by investigators. Allami now faces charges of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.

The teenage victim was rushed to Westchester Medical Center and is now reported to be in stable condition.

Garfield Road is known for its constant traffic and is lined with apartment buildings, religious schools and one of the largest temples in this Hasidic community.

There have been multiple pedestrian accidents, particularly involving children, in the Hasidic areas of Orange and Rockland counties over the past year, with several ending tragically.
