Gas tax cap brings relief as Rockland drivers save up to $2 per fill-up

Drivers who get gas in Rockland County will be able to save close to $2 per fill-up thanks to a new measure that goes into effect today.
Under the new rule, Rockland County's 4% sales tax on gasoline will be applied only to the first $3 per gallon, rather than the full retail price.
According to AAA, the average price of gasoline in Rockland is approaching $5 per gallon, and if that happens the cap would save $1.60 per fill-up.
Rockland County Legislator Beth Davidson sponsored the resolution, and it was unanimously passed by the Legislature and County Executive Ed Day.
Rockland County lawmakers took similar action back in 2022, when gas prices soared as the economy was still in post-pandemic recovery. The cap affects only the county portion of the sales tax; New York State per-gallon taxes remain in place.
The gas sales tax cap will remain in effect until March 1.
