Suspect in DC family killing believed to be in Brooklyn
District of Columbia police chief Cathy Lanier says investigators believe a suspect in the mysterious slayings of a wealthy Washington family and their housekeeper is hiding out in Brooklyn.
Lanier said at a news conference Thursday that they have been in touch with police in New York as they seek 34-year-old Daron Dylon Wint on charges of first-degree murder.
Police from the NYPD's 69th Precinct in Canarsie questioned Wint's girlfriend Thursday night. Authorities say she told police that Wint arrived in Brooklyn Tuesday and stayed at her home.
Investigators are combing through surveillance video for leads on where he might have gone after leaving the girlfriend's house.
When firefighters responded to a house fire on May 14, they found bodies inside. Authorities believe the fire was intentionally set. Slain were 46-year-old Savvas Savopoulos; his 47-year-old wife, Amy; their son, Philip; and housekeeper Veralicia Figueroa. Police say they found Wint's DNA on a pizza crust at the crime scene.
Multiple reports say the family may have been tied up, doused in gasoline, tortured and extorted for money.
Lanier says investigators believe Wint worked for Savopoulos' company American Ironworks in the past.
She advises Wint to turn himself in, noting that his family has asked him to do so.
Wint has prior convictions including destruction of property and burglary.
