Yonkers police say a Westchester businessman is responsible for illegally dumping garbage on Chicken Island.
Police say they used surveillance video to track down Croton businessman Steven Palmiotto. They say the 40-year-old owner of the hauling company TMI Industries was captured on camera over the weekend illegally dumping 44,000 pounds of garbage in the city parking lot known as Chicken Island.
Officials arrested Palmiotto yesterday. They say they don't know why he chose Chicken Island to dump the garbage or if he's done it before.
A new law raised the fine for dumping in Yonkers from $500 to $5,000 with a possible $250,000 fine for extreme cases. It allows the city to impound vehicles used in illegal dumping.
Palimiotto is facing thousands of dollars in fines. He is due in court next week.
