5h agoThe chairperson of the Town of Wappinger democratic party says the recent efforts to provide asylum to two busloads of migrants that arrived in Poughkeepsie late Sunday night are not costing any local taxpayer dollars.
"I want everybody to know that New York City is paying for these rooms and one meal a day for at least four months," said Town of Wappinger Chair Robin Licari, stressing the point that the temporary care and housing for the migrants is not costing taxpayer dollars. She said any negative response to the migrant crisis is unnecessary.
"I've heard a lot of negativity, OK? And the truth is, I just wanted these people to be welcomed with warm hearts," Licari added.
Dutchess County went into an official state of emergency ahead of the arrival of those asylum seekers, though it is unclear whether any more are expected to be sent to the area from downstate.
