News 12 spoke with Orangetown Town Supervisor Chris Day about his plans to revitalize downtown Pearl River.
Phil Schloss grew up in Pearl River and now works at Russo's House of Pizza on East Central Avenue. But when he looks out the window at the downtown area, he says he doesn't like what he sees.
"Everything has died in this town," he says. "There used to be movie theaters here."
As businesses have shuttered, the town has lost some of its luster. And with less foot traffic, existing stores are hurting. But Town Supervisor Day says he's looking to stop that trend.
"We can't let the macroeconomic trends shutter our small downtowns," Day says.
Before devising what actions to take, there will be a development study and public hearing. The town will also hire a full-time economic development coordinator.
"My hope is by March or April of next year we'll have a plan rolling," says Day.
A large part of this plan involves how to develop housing near the train station so millennials will have an incentive to stay.
A public hearing on economic development will be held in October.
