Officials at SUNY Purchase stepped up security after an alleged gunman was reported on campus Sunday night.
The school's emergency system fielded calls Sunday night about a disruptive guest at an on-campus party. The person was not a student, and witnesses claimed he had a gun.
Authorities say a weapon was never fired. They believe the alleged gunman is no longer on campus.
The incident prompted emergency emails. Students were told not to leave the premises of where they were while police investigated the incident.
Mason McDowell and other students stayed inside a dorm room as police searched the woods nearby.
"We just camped out there through the night until we got confirmation the campus was safe," he said.
Police are sifting through evidence, including possible cellphone video, to track the whereabouts of the alleged gunman. They are also interviewing witnesses.
