An inmate at the Suffolk County Jail has been charged with assaulting a corrections officer.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office held a news conference on what they say was an unprovoked assault that left the officer injured. The inmate's mother had made multiple accusations on social media, claiming her son was the actual victim.
The alleged assault happened on Dec. 19.
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon says 27-year-old Steven Reid III is an alleged Bloods gang member most recently incarcerated for attempted murder when he opened fire on a candlelight vigil in Bellport.
The 26-year-old corrections officer was hit several times and is still not back on the job because of his injuries.
The inmate's mother Veleda Spellman, who is a social media influencer, has made online claims that her son was mistreated in jail. She alleges that her son's shoulder was dislocated, was tased 18 times and was denied medical care for 24 hours.
The Suffolk County sheriff has denied those claims. He says Reid III was seen by medical staff three times and taken to the hospital. No injuries were reported.
Reid III is being charged with felony assault on top of the attempted murder charge.
Toulon is considering having Reid III and his brother moved to a different facility because of social media claims being made by the family.
