A Kane in Your Corner investigation is helping a family get answers after they say their father’s life insurance wishes were ignored.
Richard Werner died last March at 90 years old. Documents show he named his two children as beneficiaries.
But when his daughter Loren Svetvilas filed a claim, Prudential said the money had already been paid to Werner’s second wife.
Loren said, "Prudential wrote the check to his wife, who's not the beneficiary he named. I'm just so dumbfounded, mystified. I just don't understand."
She says she appealed twice with no success. “They just can't punt and say, oh well, we made a mistake, tough luck, we already paid the money," says family attorney Ken Vercammen.
After News 12 contacted the NEA, the union said it would pay the claim.
"None of this would have come about without you and your team. We were just spinning our wheels and hitting our head against a wall,” says Svetvilas.
