A woman in Elmsford fought off a burglary suspect Saturday morning, who then took police on a chase that spanned two counties.
The woman, a retired corrections officer, returned to her home at the Elm Apartments where she found the burglary in progress around 9 a.m.
“She noticed that the bathroom was closed. I guess the burglar, or the perp was inside the bathroom. When he came out they got into a scuffle,” said Tyron Crute, the woman’s husband and a security officer for the Department of Homeland Security. “She wound up getting the plate numbers, dialing 911 and the police came right out."
Crute and his wife told News 12 that they didn’t know the suspect and called it a “random” act.
The woman, whose father is a chaplain with the Greenburgh Police Department, was not injured in the struggle.
The robbery suspect is in custody after leading police on a northbound chase on the Saw Mill River Parkway, which ended with him crashing on the Taconic.
He was arrested just over the Putnam County line, in what officers describe as an end to a crime spree that began in Queens on Saturday morning.
He is now in Westchester County police custody.
