North Salem was among the Hudson Valley communities battered by Tuesday’s storm.
Hope Sandor, 16, says she and her family raced to the basement of their home as a backyard tree came crashing down, damaging part of the house on Overlook Road in North Salem.
"Our tree ended up going right through our deck, hitting some of our roof. It was really scary, really crazy,” she says.
Schools in Northern Westchester were closed Wednesday due to the storm toppling trees and leaving about 1,400 homes without power after transmission lines running electricity to substations were damaged.
Deputy Town Supervisor Peter Kamenstein says there were a lot down poles and wires, adding that it may take a couple of days to recover.
