Cuomo tours storm-ravaged Putnam County

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo toured some of the storm-ravaged spots in Putnam Valley Wednesday after the county got pummeled by heavy winds, rains and two tornadoes.

Cuomo declared a state of emergency in Putnam County, deploying 125 New York National Guard members to further assist the community, while utility crews restore power to thousands of people left in the dark.

A main focus was clearing major debris off the roads, a mess that caused a near-death experience for people like Joe Cardinale.

Cardinale was heading home from work Tuesday on Church Street when a tree and all of its branches crumbled on top of his truck.

“I thought it was it. My eyes were closed and I could see the light clear as day through my eyelids, it was so bright,” he says.

Cuomo warned residents to stay proactive.

“You have to expect storms, tornadoes, losing power and you should equip yourself knowing that in mind, having an emergency kit, or if it's appropriate, an emergency generator,” said Cuomo.

Comfort stations have been set up for residents in Putnam County who need to charge their electronics or use a bathroom while electric companies get the power back up and running.
