Stew Leonard’s says it wants the iconic “I Love New York” sign for its stores if they are taken off New York highways.

The symbolic, bright, big red heart on the fluorescent blue "I Love NY" signs have been a part of the Empire State since Gov. Andrew Cuomo launched the campaign back in 2013.

The 514 iconic signs promoting New York tourism may have to be dumped soon because the Federal Highway Administration is claiming they violate highway signage laws.

Federal regulators say they are a distraction for drivers because designs like the big red heart force them to take their eyes off the road for no reason.

Stew Leonard’s says it wants those signs for three New York stores, including the Yonkers location, to add a bit of flair and nostalgia to its local produce and milk departments.

“However we can help promote New York, we want to do that,” says Blake Leonard, of Stew Leonard’s.

The state DOT says it is in ongoing discussions on the matter and that it believes that the signs do not pose any safety risk to motorists.
