State education officials toured the East Ramapo school district this morning, inspecting Ramapo High School where there have been concerns over leaking roofs and unpleasant smells.

State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia has been on the job for less than a year. During that time, one of the major issues she's had to deal with has been the East Ramapo School District. The commissioner toured three schools in the district this morning, with Ramapo High School being the first stop.

District parents have been vocal about the conditions in the school buildings, with a leaking roof and odors at Ramapo High School being the latest flashpoint. The conditions have kept three classrooms from being used. "You can't have a learning environment when you have water falling on kids' heads. That can't occur and we all need to be responsive to that," says Elia.

Elia also visited the early learning center at Kakiat Elementary School and Summit Park Elementary School.

State Sen. David Carlucci says he has secured $1 million in state funds to repair the roof at Ramapo High School. There is still no word on when the work will be done.
