Hudson Valley Vietnam War veterans learned Thursday that they'll finally be getting a place to call their own in Albany.
A newly signed state law will recognize the New York chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America as a benevolent order. The law grants the organization an office in Albany.
State Sen. Terrence Murphy, a co-sponsor of the bill, celebrated the occasion with veterans in Somers' Lasdon Park, home to Westchester County's Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Trail.
Many local vets who have been active within the organization for years wonder why it took so long for this to happen.
"We found it hard to believe that we weren't recognized as an official organization in the state of New York," says veteran Eugene Parotta.
State lawmakers have already begun filing paperwork to make room in the state Capitol for the new office and hope to have it up and running soon.
