Neighbors in a Spring Valley community are mourning the death of a 20-month-old boy who was fatally struck by a pickup truck near his family's home Friday.
The accident happened in the parking lot at the Lottie Gardens apartment complex in Rose Avenue. Police say a silver pickup truck had just picked up two passengers before the 20-month-old Dominic Mero was struck by the front of the vehicle.
Neighbors say Mero and his siblings were playing outside, and officials believe Mero ran into the street. There is a dispute over who was watching the boy when he was killed. Some neighbors claim he was being watched by a sibling, while others claim both parents were home and never left their children alone.
Residents say there is a blind spot in the lot as drivers turn in, where children often play. One neighbor used to put up a sign warning drivers to be careful, but that resident moved away one week ago.
The pickup driver, a 33-year-old Pomona man, remained on the scene. No charges have been filed. Police say they will release the name of the driver when their investigation is complete.
