High school basketball playoffs are almost here, and the recent action on the court brought pre-playoff excitement around the Hudson Valley.

The last time the Mount Vernon Knights met the New Rochelle Huguenots, it was a three-point Knights win.

And the game over the weekend was another nail biter.

Picking it up in the third quarter, Raymond Dixon showed his range with Huguenots leading by two as they headed into the fourth.

The Knights always play good defense though, as Yussef Adeyi stole the ball to lay it in the basket to bring Mount Vernon back on top.

Then with under 30 seconds to play, the Huguenots were down by one. But Prakash Keeterhagen somehow got the shot and New Rochelle was up by one.

With Mount Vernon in possession, Irvin Patrick took it coast to coast for the lead, but New Rochelle still had some time left.

Dixon passed it to Promise Opurum, but Mount Vernon’s Troy Hupstead came up with a block.

Mount Vernon won another thriller, 58-57.

Prior to the Peekskill/ Spring Valley game, Spring Valley Tigers head coach Willie Worsley was honored. Worsley was one of five African-Americans that started for Texas Western on their 1966 National Championship team. The story was chronicled in the movie "Glory Road."

Peekskill had the edge early on with Antonio Taylor from downtown to put the Red Devils up by three.

Then on the break, Jayson Tinsley went high off the glass. It was 11-6, but the Tigers would rally.

Emanuel Boulin with the contested lay in gave Spring Valley the lead.

Chris White went down low with the reverse layup. He had 18 points and 7 boards.

In the end, Spring Valley got the win on the road with a 70-63 final.

Over to high school girls’ basketball, the annual Pauline Ricci Memorial Classic honored the mother of Ossining Pride head coach Dan Ricci, and his team came out strong against the North Rockland Red Raiders.

On the break, Brooke Weeks scored an easy lay-in. Then Lily Barossi passed the ball to Ede Walker, and the junior hit nothing but net to bring the lead by 10.

With time running out in the quarter, Sophia Corretjer beat the buzzer, but the North Rockland Red Raiders still trailed 20-13.

In the second quarter, North Rockland inched closer with Ja-nay Brown passing the ball to Lina Dimarsico to bring Red Raiders within 5.

But the Pride would keep its distance the rest of the way. Barossi received a pass from Walker to bring Ossining the victory, 80-54.
