Westchester County Executive Andy Spano unveiled a proposal Wednesday aimed at helping school districts save money by sharing non-educational services.
Spano says he wants to follow the lead of Nassau County and hire a consultant who would work with the schools to identify where savings can be found.
According to estimates, Westchester schools spend a total of about $1 million, or nearly 30 percent of their budgets, on non-instructional items related to district operations.
Southern Westchester BOCES Superintendent Robert Monson says other states he's worked in have been able to reduce their costs by doing what Spano is proposing.
