At least one person was killed in a police chase that ended in East Orange involving a stolen vehicle, a source tells News 12 New Jersey.
Park Avenue between Washington Street and Glenwood Avenue was temporarily closed for several hours on Tuesday.
Law enforcement officials have not released many details about the investigation. But a nearby school was put into lockdown for a time and people in the community are left wondering what happened.
"It had to do with the fact that the police was chasing somebody apparently. Two people or three people were hit by the cars," said East Orange resident Leandra Montalvo.
News 12 crews saw several crashed cars are the scene and even one that was burned out. There was also a damaged ambulance.
A source tells News 12 that this all reportedly started with a stolen car from Montclair that was involved in a robbery. This then led to a police chase that started in Bloomfield and ended in East Orange, according to the source. A pedestrian was killed during the chase, according to the source.
News 12 was told that the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General is leading the investigation into the incident.
