Officials with Somers Central School District are reaffirming their commitment to address antisemitism following the discovery of four swastika's on school campuses late last year.
In December, a swastika was found drawn on a classroom desk at Somers High School.
This comes following the discovery of three swastikas and a profanity on a student bathroom wall in the middle school back in September.
On Tuesday, Superintendent Dr. Adam Bronstein outlined the steps the district is taking to address antisemitism and other forms of hate.
"All students in the high school will have the opportunity to attend what is called the '13 Drivers Licenses' presentation which is in collaboration with the Holocaust and Human Rights Education Center," said School Superintendent Dr. Adam Bronstein during a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday.
An additional exhibit will also be available during social studies classes and free time.
Student Allison Lusthaus who sits on the Board of Education as an ex officio member worked on the school's upcoming presentation, calling it an educational opportunity.
"Myself as well as a group of students at the high school have been planning to have a second-generation holocaust speaker come and speak next week to all students through grades ninth through 12th and it will be a great opportunity for students to be able to reflect on what has happened and also learn more on why certain things are hateful," said Lusthaus.
A study conducted by the Anti-Defamation League found that there were 860 antisemitic incidents in non-Jewish K-12 schools in 2024 alone.
"When 4 in 10 young American Jews have been targeted by antisemitism, that tells us that our schools and our college campuses are ground zero for hatred towards the Jewish community. We need to address this in schools, because we cannot wait until people are adults," said the Myra Clark-Siegel, regional director of the American Jewish Committee.
The district says it is committed to reviewing and strengthening educational practices addressing antisemitism, and all forms of hate with a focus on prevention.
