A 475-foot smokestack in Stony Point was toppled Tuesday as part of an effort to raze a generating station.

The smokestack at the Lovett Generating Station was demolished within seven seconds by an explosion from 100 pounds of nitroglycerin dynamite.

The concrete, steel and metal structure, which was built in 1968, was reconstructed in 1987. Atlanta-based power company Mirant Services LLC has owned it since 1999. The plant provided electricity for the power grid but was closed in April 2007.
