A high school student from Sleepy Hollow is about to make her mark on the world as the only New Yorker to be selected this year to join the USA Debate Team, which will compete against other schools in the U.S. and abroad.
In March, Alexa Murphy was one of two students appointed to Westchester County's Youth Poet Laureate program.
The 17-year-old was recently selected as one of 12 members of the USA Debate Team, and the only one from New York.
She shares her secret for debating success.
"You really have to be collaborative, and willing to work things in order to be successful. I guess argumentative is the other thing that you really have to be, which I naturally am," Murphy said.
The USA Debate Team competes in school tournaments worldwide and her first appearance on the team is set for next month in Texas.
Murphy will serve a year on the team and then will head off to college, with a possible career in law.
