Some sisters from Westchester County are saving lives after they found their father's kidney donor on Craigslist.
The Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America hosted a benefit at Lucy's Lounge in Pleasantville Friday.
The sisters started the foundation after their father needed a new kidney in 2007. After searching wherever they could for a donor, they found a match on Craigslist.
"Our father at the time didn't believe us," said Jennifer Flood. "It was amazing to see the outpouring of people wanting to help."
Dr. Aromma Kapoor, a kidney specialist at Westchester Medical Center, says kidney disease is a serious and common problem. She says the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation of America is a quick way to match recipients with living donors.
"The organization gets promoted, people get tested or find out details and it helps get us a pool of donors that is otherwise untapped for us," she says.
Through the foundation, recipients wait a few months to a year for a living kidney donor. Seven people have already benefited from the foundation since it started in 2008.
