The parents of a 7-year-old boy who died on a Rye Playland ride have tentatively settled their lawsuit against Westchester County for $1.25 million.

Westchester officials also agreed to set up a scholarship in the name of Jon-Kely Cassara, who died on Aug. 3, 2005. Westchester County owns the park.

The boy was on Rye Playland's Ye Old Mill ride and got out of his boat soon after the indoor ride started. He somehow ended up in its channel of water, dead from a blunt head injury.

Robert and Elayne Cassara, of Norwalk, Conn., had accused Westchester of negligence in the death of their son. The Cassara family attorney told the jury of six that the county did not have the proper safety procedures in place to operate the ride. Officials acknowledged that the ride was understaffed.
