There's a new push to combat what's being called a major lead crisis plaguing Hudson Valley homeowners.
Sen. Chuck Schumer announced new legislation Monday to help homeowners remove lead from their homes.
"We will allow landlords or tenants, whoever owns the building, to get a $4,000 tax credit to cover the cost of removing lead paint and plumbing," he said
According to Schumer, 40 percent of the homes in Westchester have lead in them because they were built before 1978. After 1978, the use of lead paint was banned.
Schumer also wants the federal government to help struggling homeowners get the lead out by increasing the funding for its lead abatement program from $110 million to $230 million a year.
In 2014, 158 children in Westchester tested positive for lead poisoning, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
