Police say a school bus driver was caught masturbating by a ninth-grade boy on his way to school Tuesday in Suffern.
They say during a trip to Suffern High School and a parochial school in the area, 60-year-old Robert Bertart, of Orangetown, began to expose himself and started to masturbate.
"The student was able to see the driver in the mirror and had a good view of what was going on," said Lt. Mark Emma of the Rampo police.
The alleged incident lasted about a minute, according to police. The boy was left shaken.
Police say it's not clear whether Bertart knew the boy was on the bus, but they say he was neither looking nor interacting with him at the time.
Authorities say the boy waited until he got to school to report the incident. Shortly after, police arrested the driver. His bus company, Vel Coach of Nanuet, fired him.
Bertart is facing charges of public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police say that Bertart is out on bail and scheduled to be arraigned at Montebello Courthouse Nov. 12.
