A school bus was caught on camera bypassing a stop sign in a West Haverstraw neighborhood.
A concerned neighbor shared with News 12 video of the incident that occurred on North Wayne Avenue.
"There's children that play out here almost every single day when the weather is nice in the front yards and the driveways, and I just don't want to see them get hit," said Helaine Nemuth, who recorded the video.
The village added oversized stop signs, a lowered speed limit and installed additional signage with text that reads “full” below the stop sign itself.
The driver, Hung Nguyen, admitted he went through the stop sign, but that there were no children on board.
"When I take the bus home and when I go in the small roads, something like just, slowly, I don't hurry anything," Nguyen said.
Nguyen lives a few houses down from the stop sign and often parks the bus in his driveway. He said he is a respected bus driver and he never had intentions of putting anyone's life in danger.
"I've been there 12 years and never happen anything. Never ticket," Nguyen said.
North Wayne Avenue is a dead-end stretch with a couple of other dead-end streets that break out alongside it. This is one of the reasons why some residents say stop signs are just not necessary.
"It's all residential, everybody here knows everybody and we all know when the kids are out and everything, we all pay attention,” said resident Joseph Stanger. “So I mean, that was a waste of taxpayer money, putting up them signs."
"That bus that is rolling through that stop sign is doing less than 25, they're not completely slowing down, but if there was no stop sign there, they would be going faster," said West Haverstraw Mayor Robert D'Amelio.
But Nemuth believes the rules of the road are not something drivers can pick and choose.
While an investigation continues into Nyugen, he said will ensure to make that full stop moving forward.
