Now that school is back in session, police across the Hudson Valley have instituted safety measures to keep kids safe.
Today police in Irvington kicked off their 'Slow Down Irvington' initiative.
Police set up a safety road block on Route 9 at Main Street and gave out fliers, reminding drivers to be courteous and careful. They also checked for seatbelts, inspections and suspended licenses.
Officers say people speed up and down the busy roadway, not always stopping for children on the crosswalk. "There's been a couple of kids injured on the crosswalks here in the village. So we just want people to be aware of the pedestrians out there on the road," says Irvington Police Officer Jim Egloff.
Egloff tells News 12 they picked today to start the initiative because most kids are out of school for the second day of Rosh Hashanah. "We try to pick a quiet day. We knew school was closed today, so we figured we would do it today to avoid all the buses and bus traffic and everyone commuting to work."
