The $129 million Bassick High School officially opened its doors on the South End of Bridgeport Tuesday; on a campus it will share with the University of Bridgeport.
"This new Bassick High School is the crown jewel of our school district, and we are so proud to see it open today," said Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery.
"It's the most expensive school ever built in Bridgeport, yet what it offers is priceless - a world class education for each and every student who passes through these doors," Avery said.
Mayor Joe Ganim said the city has been trying to get a new Bassick High School built for decades.
"Today we finally did it - and it feels wonderful to tell our students they'll be getting the best education available anywhere in the world," Ganim said.
"For the first time, Bassick will have its own sporting field, so our kids won't have to go to another school to play sports. This is a huge milestone in the history of Bridgeport and I'm so proud to see it with my own eyes today," Ganim said.
