A retired Greenburgh police officer was shot while responding to a burglary in Elmsford Monday, and the suspects believed to be involved were taken into custody, police say.

News 12 is told retired Officer Peter Schmidt was keeping an eye on his neighbor's unoccupied home on Payne Road when he spotted two burglars and confronted them. Police say he was shot twice as a result, and the suspects fled.

Schmidt, who retired nine years ago, was shot in the arm and stomach. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center, where he remains in stable condition.

The two men suspected in the shooting were stopped by police and taken into custody on the Bronx River Parkway, near the Cross County Parkway in Yonkers.

Police were seen searching a wooded area along the Sprain Brook Parkway near Central Park Avenue in Yonkers for the weapon used in the shooting. They say it is believed that the gun was tossed out of the suspects' vehicle as they were fleeing. There is no word on whether the weapon was recovered.

Schmidt's son, Peter Schmidt Jr., is on the Greenburgh police force and was off duty at the time. He was able to write down the license plate of the suspects' car, which allowed officers to track them down within minutes.

The suspects could face charges of attempted murder, among other felonies.
