Residents: New school bus pickup point causes safety issues
A gated community in Orange County is up in arms after its school district relocated the school bus pickup point from inside its gates to a public road.
Residents and board members of Highland Lake Estates say that moving the pickup point to the very active Ridge Road causes safety issues for their children in the Monroe-Woodbury school district.
The parents say the change is because the school district refuses to enter through security gates, even though the gates have already been up for a year.
"Since we put up a security gate system to protect our residents from trespassers and crime, they have made the sole decision of not coming in here," says Carmine Mastrogiacolo, president of Highland Lake Estates.
Resident Melissa Burris says the district is putting the children in jeopardy and financially hurting the families.
News 12 reached out to the Monroe-Woodbury Central School district for comment,  but it has not returned calls.
