During a public meeting Wednesday night, Yonkers residents got a look at plans to build a billion-dollar dome over the Hillview Reservoir.
The 90-acre site is located between Kimball Avenue and the New York State Thruway next to the Yonkers Raceway. New York City wants to construct a dome over the reservoir, which supplies drinking water to the city, due to state and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mandates.
The project calls for covering the massive site with a roof of concrete and steel beams, and then topping it off with a layer of dirt and grass. The dome would be at least five times the size of the 13-acre roof that covers the New Orleans Superdome. Construction is expected to take several years.
A New York City Department of Environmental Protection spokeswoman says the roof is needed to eliminate bird waste and bacteria. City of Yonkers spokesman David Simpson believes it will also protect the water supply from a potential biological terror attack.
Still, Yonkers officials and residents have concerns.
"There's going to be a lot of issues there. Where do the workers park? There's not a lot of space around that reservoir. Where do they store their construction equipment? How much noise is going to be generated?" Simpson says. Many Yonkers residents are backing the project, saying they're OK with it if it's for the greater good. "It might be pretty noisy ? but overall I agree with what they're doing," says Ryan Schinnerer. "If it's going to make the water cleaner and safer, I'm all for it."
