Residents of a Poughkeepsie apartment building that caught fire on Saturday say one person died and others were displaced by the blaze.
The fire broke out in a rear apartment of a multiunit building. Crews say the flames completely engulfed the unit, leaving extensive damage behind. Two windows were later boarded up, and much of the apartment was destroyed.
People at the scene, including residents and remediation workers, told News 12 that the person living in the affected apartment died. The building has since been condemned, and residents have been told not to return.
Several tenants are now searching for temporary housing. One woman who lived in a basement apartment said her unit was flooded by water used to extinguish the fire.
Investigators say the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. More information is expected as officials continue their investigation.
