If an analysis of the 2015 Thruway budget is correct, the current toll for thousands of commuters on the new Tappan Zee Bridge could triple.
An analysis of the 2015 Thruway Authority budget by the Empire Center for New York Policy concluded the only way to pay for the new span is to increase the toll from $5 to $15 by 2018, considering that the Thruway Authority already faces a $305 million deficit.
Financing the nearly $4 billion bridge has been a struggle, with some potential federal funding sources declared off limits.
The Thruway Authority is not confirming the $15 toll, but that price has been rumored for months.
Thruway spokesman Dan Weiller will only say, "The Thruway Authority is reviewing our 2015 proposed budget and evaluating what actions may be necessary to address operations, capital and debt service needs."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that it is premature to say what the tolls will be, but that it's likely the state will provide subsidies to keep them low.
