Police in Yonkers are searching for vandals that they say not only stole a statue of Jesus, but sprayed black paint all over several Virgin Mary statues.
David Sotomayer put up a statue of Jesus when they bought their home on North Broadway three years ago. This weekend, someone stole it and spray painted the word "stop" in the shell.
Sotomayer's neighbor was also victimized as their statue of the Virgin Mary was painted black.
Sotomayer says he has surveillance cameras at his home and caught the vandal on tape. Police are now looking at that video.
According to police, the spray-painting also happened at several homes in nearby neighborhoods. A nativity display at a Park Avenue home was also hit and again, the Virgin Mary's face was painted black and the baby Jesus was knocked over.
The shrine of Virgin Mary at the Sacred Heart Church Convent that overlooks the school's playground had the face spray-painted black and the words 'idol worship' written nearby. Church workers were able to get the paint off and the statue has been cleaned.
No arrests have been made, and Yonkers police are asking anyone with information to give them a call at (914) 377-7900.
