Red light traffic cameras could soon be coming to some areas in White Plains.

The city's Common Council approved a measure to install the cameras, but the proposal still needs to be passed by state lawmakers.

If approved, the cameras would be installed at 10 of the city's most accident-prone intersections.

White Plains Mayor Tom Roach says he's aware some might see it as a way for the city to make money, but says the revenue collected from the cameras will go toward improving or expanding pedestrian and bicycle pathways.

Officials say it's too early to estimate how much the program would cost.

While the state Senate passed the bill Tuesday night, it still needs Assembly approval before the session ends this week.

If the measure is rejected, Mayor Roach says the city will try again next year.
