The town of Somers wants to save car tires and some cash.
The town now has a new machine that recycles asphalt and is a cost-cutting way to fill potholes.
Officials say that recycling just makes financial and environmental sense. "We take old, broken up black top, that the plows rip up or broken roads, and we melt it down in this machine. We then add some new asphalt and make a good permanent patch that lasts," says Somers Highway Superintendent Thomas Chiaverini.
The Highway Department says spending is about half of what it usually is to fill the potholes.
