Recently released running back Ray Rice attended a football game at his high school alma mater in New Rochelle Saturday.
Rice attended the game at New Rochelle High School with his wife, Janay Rice, and their infant daughter. There was a heavy media presence among speculation he would attend, and supporters of Rice wore his No. 5 jersey.
It marked Rice's first public appearance since his suspension. He signed some autographs, chatted with supporters and took photos with fans. He did not answer questions from the media.
Rice was released by the Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL this week after video surfaced of him punching Janay, then his fiancee, in an elevator.
Rice had previously been suspended for two games by the league after a different video surfaced showing the apparent aftermath of the punch: Rice dragging his unconscious fiancee out of the elevator.
Rice's jersey and photo were removed this week from the New Rochelle High School Hall of Fame, but the photo was later put back up on the wall by students. In a letter to parents, the principal explained that the wall is meant to highlight alumni who are role models and inspire students.
Some students disagreed with the move, saying the school should award him for everything he has done. Some also point out that Rice donated a lot of money to the school.
Sources say the school's coach considered forfeiting the season over the decision to remove Rice's jersey. The coach would not comment on the report, instead focusing on his support for Rice at Saturday's game.
At the game Saturday, someone had hung Rice's No. 5 jersey in the endzone in a show of support.
