Some Mount Vernon residents say they are living near a rat infestation that spans several blocks.
News 12 is told 21 North Bond St. seems to be where the crux of the problem originates. Open piles of garbage can be seen outside the residence, serving as feeding ground for the rats.
Across the street, more mounds of trash are stacked against an abandoned home.
News 12 is told that rats were spotted outside Firehouse Station 4 of the city's fire department on nearby Oak Street, across the street from Hamilton Elementary School.
No problems have been reported there so far.
City officials say they have only recently heard about the problem and that the Department of Public Works is working with extermination crews to eradicate the issue.
News 12 is told many of the homeowners on the street have been issued fines over the amount of trash lying in the streets.
