Monday's storm that dumped more than 3 inches of rain on the Hudson Valley has caused Westchester County health officials to shut down nine beaches.
The following beaches are closed until further notice:
New Rochelle:
Hudson Park Beach, Davenport Beach Club, Greentree Country Club and Surf Club on the Sound.
Mamaroneck:
Harbor Island Park, Beach Point Club, Orienta Beach Club and Mamaroneck Beach and Yacht Club.
Rye:
The Coveleigh Club.
Westchester County's Health Department has a beach surveillance program designed to protect the public from illnesses associated with swimming in contaminated waters. After Monday's heavy rainfall, Health Department officials say there is concern over discharges from stormwater drains that can cause high levels of harmful bacteria. They say that bacteria can cause swimmers to become sick.
The closings come just as the Hudson Valley is entering several days of hot and humid weather.
Health Department officials say they will wait a few days for the bacteria levels to go down then begin collecting beach reopening samples on Friday to check the bacteria levels.
