A Maryland mother says a scam in New York is using a picture of her son to trick people into donating to a false cause.
Ruth Scully's son Nolan died in February after battling cancer for 16 months. The scammers are using a photo of him to sell raffle tickets for a July 29 event at the Aisling Irish Community Center in Yonkers. The problem is, center employees say they've never heard of the event.
In a Facebook post, the center says the tickets are being sold for $25 each at bars throughout Westchester and New York.
Scully says the scam goes against anything her son ever stood for, as he dreamed of fighting crime. He was even presented with his own uniform by Washington, D.C. police, in which he was laid to rest.
Yonkers police are investigating the scam and urge anyone with information to come forward.
