Price increase for fares, tolls takes effect
For people who travel to and from the city, the price of commuting just got higher.
Increases averaging around 4 percent are in effect on Metro-North Railroad. A monthly ticket from Yonkers to Grand Central Station in the city now costs $169, up from $163. Commuters say they aren?t happy about the price hike, but there is nothing they can do about it.
?You make do, you cut back on something else,? a commuter says. ?Or, you just make less trips.?
Those who use mass transit aren?t the only ones affected. Port Authority bridge and tunnel prices are also higher. E-ZPass owners crossing the George Washington Bridge during off peak hours are now charged $6 instead of $4. For those traveling during peak hours, the toll costs $8.
The Tappan Zee Bridge will not be affected by the toll hike.
Some people say if the additional fares mean they will get better service, it isn?t so bad. One commuter says as long as the money is used to improve the safety of the bridges and trains, he?s OK with it.
Westchester Bee-Line bus fares are also increasing in price for non-MetroCard users. They will now cost a quarter. Transfers on the Bee-Line will be free.
New York City subway prices have increased as well.
