Another retail giant is closing its doors in Dutchess County, but it seems there is a plan in place for something new already.
Shoppers in Poughkeepsie are sad to see Sears go for good. According to reports, the city's location is one of nearly 100 Sears and Kmart stores to shutter nationwide in the next few months.
Once all of those stores close up, only 180 will remain in total.
Even as the "EVERYTHING MUST GO" signs hang in the windows, the Poughkeepsie Galleria says it's excited to repurpose the space.
In a statement, it said, "We have been proactively working to re-lease the space and will be able to share those plans in the near future. We are confident we will fill the Sears store with brands and uses that our guests will be very excited by."
That news is an immediate hit with shoppers who say they don't like shopping online.
"For me, when I shop online the thing looks very good. But when you get it, it's not all that," says Eva Smith, of Poughkeepsie.
In February 2019, Transformco acquired Sears and Kmart out of bankruptcy. Last November, the company announced the massive shutdown of its brick-and-mortar stores.
It isn't known exactly when the Sears will close up, but for now, items are being discounted 10-40% off.
