A Westchester resident on vacation in Hawaii says people there are bracing for the worst as Hurricane Lane heads toward Oahu.
Much of the state is under a hurricane warning, including Oahu, as torrential rain from Lane's outer bands have already triggered landslides that fell onto parts of a major road on Big Island.
Lane is the first major hurricane to hit Hawaii in 26 years.
BJ, from Port Chester, FaceTimed with News 12 from Waikiki Beach in Oahu where tourists continued to rent surf boards, despite the rising surf and winds.
"The storm is still hours away from Oahu, so there's plenty of people still out in the water,” says BJ.
However, he says Hawaii residents aren't used to seeing storms like these, especially Category 4 hurricanes, and they're not taking any chances.
BJ says people are locking things down, including lawn chairs and furniture so they don’t become projectiles.
He says he hopes Lane loses a little of her "Hawaiian" punch.
"Hawaiians always have a cavalier attitude because they always come close and miss,” he says.
There are currently still flights in and out of Hawaii as the major airports remain open.
