Police are investigating a fatal Yonkers shooting that took place during an alleged robbery attempt Thursday night.

Investigators say a 22-year-old man, who was identified by neighbors as David Avila, was accosted by three men as he was sitting on his stoop in front of 15 Mount Carmel Place. According to police, the men tried to steal his cell phone, iPod and wallet. Police say they eventually shot him three times in the chest.

The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in critical condition but later died.

All of the items the suspects tried to take were left behind.
