Police in Deerpark are asking for the public's help to find the owner of a dog that was left to die on the side of a road.
A passer-by found the pit bull, now named Sweet Sally, on Wednesday along Route 209. Rescuers say the dog couldn't move, hadn't eaten in weeks, was dehydrated and was suffering from organ failure.
Authorities believe that the dog's collar had been removed recently.
"It's very sad and hard for our staff to try to understand why people might do this," says Susan Beecher, of the Humane Society of Port Jervis and Deerpark. The prognosis is uncertain for the dog.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call 845-856-4333.
