A Rockville Centre Police Department detective has been charged with a hate crime, police say.
Police say 40-year-old John Murphy used a racial slur toward a Black man who was working last week at the corner of Sylvan Court and Weeks Avenue in Manorville.
Police say the victim was approached by Murphy, who lives in the area.
Murphy identified himself as an officer and refused to look at the worker's credentials, police say.
He's also accused of kicking the man's SUV, ripping off a light and throwing it at him.
Prosecutors stated in court that Murphy allegedly said to the victim, quote, "we don't want your kind around here." They also say that he then called him the N word.
Murphy pleaded not guilty to the charges he is facing, including criminal mischief as a hate crime.
